To learn that prayer doesn’t just change the world – it is meant to change each of us
Go around the room and have everyone share one high point (best thing) and one low point (worst thing) about their week
Last week, we challenged everyone to pray short ‘text-message’ prayers whenever they saw something bad happening around them. How did that go? Did you find it easy, or hard? Did you see anything cool happen?
Have you ever experienced something cool because of prayer? Share your story if you have
Have you ever prayed a prayer and not received an answer? When that happened, what did you do – did you keep praying, or did you give up? What ended up happening?
Do you feel like God has answered that prayer now? If so, how did he answer it?
What do you think happens when you pray and God doesn’t answer?
How does it feel when he doesn’t answer?
Do you think God ever ignores someone’s prayer? Why or why not?
During his talk, Darien said “Sometimes when we pray, we see immediate change. Sometimes when we pray, we have to be persistent to see something happen. But sometimes when we pray – God is wanting to change us; not the world around us”
Do you agree with that statement?
Do you think that God uses prayer to change us? If so, how can prayer change us?
Read Philipians 4:6-7 “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
What do you think this passage is trying to say?
According to this verse, how do we receive the peace of God when life sucks?
When God doesn’t seem to answer our prayers, what do you think we should do? (i.e. keep praying, give up, keep believing, etc)
ACT IT OUT:
It can be very easy to get discouraged when it seems like God isn’t answering our prayers; however this is often the best opportunity to choose to trust God, seek His peace, and grow – no matter the circumstance.
This week, when you pray, we want to encourage you to pray with power for things that you want to see change in the world – for an illness to go away, for a problem to be dealt with – and be persistent in praying that every single day. Remember – don’t give up hope just because God hasn’t answered your prayers yet – keep trusting in him and pursuing change.
Ask your group/child if there are any prayer requests or praise reports that they would like to share. Take a moment and pray over all the requests.
